Physical Education

“I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed. Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships”
– Michael Jordan

Powerful Knowledge in PE

Powerful Knowledge in Physical Education (PE) is about developing physical literacy. PE combines practical and theoretical concepts to enable students to gain powerful knowledge and explore it in a practical context.

Powerful knowledge in Physical Education:

  • Developing a broad range of fundamental motor skills, developing the consistency and performance of practical skills in isolation and in competitive/conditioned situations
  • Developing students’ knowledge of sporting activities and competing effectively using a variety of tactics and strategies across multiple disciplines individually and as part of a team
  • How to be socially aware and work effectively with students with a variety of ability levels
  • Develop resilience, perseverance, courage and self-control
  • Short term effects of exercise on the body systems
  • Components of fitness
  • Principles of training
  • Performance enhancement through training
  • Muscular system (names of muscles and movement analysis)

Curriculum Features

The curriculum is broad and balanced, allowing students to develop the knowledge and skills to be physically active and healthy now and in later life.

Our curriculum will promote a love of physical activity and the confidence to participate. In addition, students will be able to analyse their performances compared to previous ones, demonstrate improvement and achieve their personal best. The curriculum will also promote the academic side of the subject, closely linking practical and academic concepts to ensure Powerful Knowledge is accessed by all.

Students will be presented with intellectual and physical challenges, which they will work as a team to overcome while demonstrating the trust qualities. Students will develop a knowledge and understanding of how to work with other students with a variety of different skill levels and strengths.

They will be guided to use leadership qualities when working as part of a team and respond to the strengths and weaknesses of those they are working with, with the intention of students taking these skills in to working life.

Sportspersonship should be visible in all lessons, with students abiding by rules, being humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

Co-curricular Enrichment

Students will be given the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular physical activities.
